Essay Authenticity and Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The Phoenix Energy Scholarship is intended to recognize students’ authentic experiences, perspectives, and career aspirations within the oil and gas industry. Applicants are expected to submit original work that reflects their own voice, technical understanding, insight, and personal motivation for pursuing a career in energy.

While limited use of tools for basic editing—such as spelling or grammar checks—may be acceptable, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate, substantially rewrite, or meaningfully shape the content, structure, or analysis of a scholarship essay is not permitted.

All submitted essays will be reviewed for originality and potential AI-generated content. Applications found to rely heavily on AI assistance in the creation of the essay will not be considered for the scholarship award.

By submitting an application, applicants affirm that their essay is primarily their own original work, accurately reflects their academic interests and career goals in the oil and gas industry, and complies fully with this policy.

  • 2025 Phoenix Energy Scholarship Winner: Brody Greer Patton

Brody Patton, 2025 winner of the Phoenix Energy Scholarship

Phoenix Energy is thrilled to announce Brody Greer Patton as the 2025 Phoenix Energy Scholarship recipient. Brody, a first-year Petroleum Engineering student at Texas Tech University, stood out for his academic record and strong personal connection to the energy industry.

Raised in northeast Texas, Brody grew up surrounded by the world of oil and gas. His family’s ties to mineral rights, geology, and fieldwork gave him an early appreciation for the industry’s influence on local communities and livelihoods. He remembers visiting oil museums with his family and watching rigs light up the Texas horizon — experiences that helped shape his decision to pursue petroleum engineering.

Brody graduated as valedictorian of his high school and was active in FFA and 4-H, where he developed leadership skills and practical know-how. Those programs taught him responsibility, resilience, and problem-solving. These are lessons he now hopes to apply to his studies and future career in energy.

At Texas Tech, he looks forward to combining classroom learning with hands-on research and industry collaboration. His goals include helping advance technologies that improve efficiency, strengthen safety, and reduce environmental impact. He is especially interested in solutions for wastewater management, carbon reduction, and new approaches to drilling.

“Phoenix Energy’s scholarship is not just an investment in me, but is also an act of faith in the future,” Patton said. “Through their generous support, I will be able to join others at Texas Tech University in obtaining a quality education, mentorship, and experience that will position me to make a real and lasting difference. I aspire to not only improve how we extract and use energy, but also help shape the future of an industry. I am deeply grateful to Phoenix Energy for this honor.”

Adam Ferrari, Founder and CEO of Phoenix Energy, praised Patton’s vision: “Brody Patton’s story reflects an appreciation for the oil and gas industry’s roots and a clear vision for its future. His work ethic and commitment to responsible innovation are exactly what the Phoenix Energy Scholarship is meant to encourage.”

Phoenix Energy congratulates Brody Patton on this achievement and looks forward to following his journey as he begins his career in energy leadership and innovation.
